Rent Our Sheep!

land-clearing

Services

Our flock of Katahdin ewes and lambs is available for hire to clear overgrown property in the South Carolina Upstate and the greater Charlotte, NC area.

What It Is

Sheep rentals are an eco-friendly and cost-efficient alternative to jobs typically requiring power equipment. Our flock eats greenery up to about 4 feet off the ground, leaving stems and stalks visible for easy clearing. Dense brush, vines, steep hills, wooded areas, and other difficult terrain is perfect for their services.

How It Works

We visit your property to give an estimate on how many sheep are needed and for how long. On delivery day, we bring the sheep and all supplies needed. We’ll come for check-ups every 2-3 days, and at the end, we load everything back up and give the final invoice.

Why You Should

Sheep are the ideal first step to getting overgrown property under control. They are quiet and docile, a pleasure to watch as they graze the landscape. Their care is relatively simple and straightforward. They make an environmentally safe alternative to expensive landscaping services and toxic herbicides.

Things To Know

The sheep will not usually kill plants completely, especially on their first go-through. We recommend that you have a plan for next steps in place before a sheep rental to manage unwanted plants from regrowing.

FAQs

  • Our sheep are natural grazers. They will eat most types of shrubs, grasses, and ground-cover plants. They especially love Chinese privet, Manhattan euonymus, poison ivy, English ivy, kudzu, and honeysuckle. Sheep generally cause little to no damage to mature trees. The one exception in our experience is crape myrtle; they love to strip and eat its bark.

  • They will not eat very tall grass(especially with seed heads),brambles, rhododendron, vinca, azalea, Virginia creeper, and most wisteria.

  • We will visit your property to estimate how many sheep are needed and for how long. This is variable, depending on time of year and the types of plants present. Our preferred method is to fence off an acre at a time, which should take between 3 and 10 days for 12-15 sheep to clear.

We deliver the sheep and all the supplies needed for the rental. Throughout the duration, we come for check-ups every 2-3 days to refresh supplies and switch out the fence battery as needed. At the end, we load everything back up and give the final invoice.

  • We will travel up to about 50 miles from our zip code area (29730). This includes the Rock Hill, York, Chester, Lancaster, Winnsboro, Newberry, and Spartanburg areas in SC, and the Monroe, Matthews, Charlotte, Concord, Mooresville, Gastonia, Lincolnton, and Shelby areas in NC.

  • Our base fee for delivery and pick-up is $250 in the Rock Hill area (<30 minute drive from our farm), $300 in the greater Charlotte area. We charge a per diem rental fee for each ewe and lamb older than 6 months, plus itemized fees for temporary fencing, hay and feed, and hourly (human) labor. See our full Rental Fees list for details.

  • Where fencing is needed, we will supply everything to run the portable electric netting, including batteries, a ground rod, and a charger. We will bring some feed and ask that you give the sheep a daily ration to gather them for counting and checking up on them. We also supply a water tub and ask that you refill it daily.

  • Our farm business carries a commercial liability insurance policy. We ask that you advise your HOA, neighbors, or anyone else who may be concerned, that the sheep are visiting your property temporarily to do land-clearing.
